What is Skinpen Microneedling?

Clinically validated for safe and effective skin treatment, SkinPen® Microneedling naturally boosts your skin’s long-term collagen production by activating its innate ability to self-repair.

It is an innovative technique that creates dozens of small, controlled injuries to the outer layers of the skin using the SkinPen device. This process targets facial acne scars and neck wrinkles, for smoother, more radiant, younger-looking skin.

Skinpen is is the sole FDA-approved microneedling device and is highly recommended and used within the NHS by medical professionals.

Treatment Process

How Does SkinPen Work?

The procedure creates many microscopic punctures in the skin’s outer layers. The device contains 14 stainless steel surgical-grade needles validated for sharpness, durability and penetration depth. These micro-channels that have been made to stimulate collagen synthesis. As these punctures heal, the remodelling process works to improve the appearance of ageing and texture and reduce the appearance of pigmentation and acne scarring.

What to Expect Before, During & After SkinPen

Your practitioner begins by cleansing the skin and applying a numbing cream for around 15 minutes. After removing the cream, a cooling hyaluronic-based gliding gel is applied and the SkinPen device is passed over the treatment area in sections. The depth of the treatment is carefully tailored to your individual skin needs, typically ranging between 0.25 mm and 1.5 mm, with different depths used across various facial zones.

Once complete, any remaining product is massaged into the skin to enhance hydration and recovery.

Immediately afterwards, skin typically appears moderately to severely red, similar to sunburn, and may feel tight or dry. Mild pinpoint bleeding is normal. Redness can last up to a week, and peeling may start within the first few days and continue for up to one week. Makeup should be avoided for the first 48 hours.

SkinPen Aftercare & Downtime

Immediately after treatment, your skin may appear moderately to severely red, similar to a sunburn. It can feel tight, warm, or dry, and you may notice tiny pinpoint marks, all completely normal responses as your skin begins to heal.

Redness usually subsides within 48 hours. Avoid picking or exfoliating any flaking skin, as this may cause irritation or pigmentation.

You’ll need to avoid applying makeup for 48 hours post-treatment. Once this period has passed, you can use makeup if needed, though it may not sit smoothly while the skin is peeling.

SkinPen Results & Treatment Plan

Most patients begin to notice an improvement in texture and firmness within a few weeks, with continued collagen renewal over the following months.
For best results, a course of 3 to 6 sessions is usually recommended, spaced every 3 to 6 weeks depending on your skin concern.

Skinpen microneedling is performed with topical anaesthetic cream, making the treatment comfortable. Most patients describe mild vibration or light scratching rather than pain

After your SkinPen treatment, you will be provided with two homecare products to use for the following 48 to 72 hours. Within this time frame, we advise avoiding using any other products, including a cleanser and SPF.

You will then be able to resume your normal routine including active ingredients etc, once your skin has fully healed with no redness or peeling of the skin.

We advise you to wait 4 weeks for any facial or laser treatment, please speak with your practitioner who will advise you further. We recommend 2 weeks after SkinPen treatment for any injectable procedures such as botox or filler.

SkinPen is most commonly used on the face, neck and decollete. However, the device can be treated on other areas of the body such as hands and the back. It depends on the skin concern we are treating which will be assessed before going ahead to ensure it is the best-suited treatment for you.

Results will last depending on the skin concern and the home maintenance. Typically results last longer once you have completed a course and generally last up to 1 year to a year and a half. However, if you are targeting ageing, we recommend having a maintenance session once every 6 months to prevent the collagen production from slowing down again.

SkinPen is a medical device that is also used in the NHS by medical professionals . There is a difference in strength due to the way SkinPen technology works in the skin and the downtime is much greater than a home use micro-needling and will always need guidance when the skin is healing. Whereas home micro-needling, if used correctly your skin may appear slightly pink but doesn’t last long. Therefore the SkinPen procedure is more effective and the results last longer.

Redness from SkinPen can last from 24 hours to 1 week and sometimes longer. This also depends on the depth of the treatment and varies from person to person. We always advise to allow 1 to 2 weeks for downtime with redness and/or peeling of the skin.

Yes, how much peeling or dryness will occur depends on the depth we treat and generally varies from person to person. However, minimal or excessive peeling is both normal and the treatment will still be as effective.
